An essential part of maintaining quality in radiology and other healthcare services, Maintenance of Certification (MOC) demonstrates the commitment of physicians to continually developing professionals skills and improving patient services. Under the American Board of Radiology (ABR) policies, physicians must satisfy four components to attain their MOC: Professionalism and Professional Standing; Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment; Assessment of Knowledge, Judgment, and Skills; and Improvement in Medical Practice.

The first segment, Professionalism and Professional Standing, ensures that certified physicians possess a valid, unrestricted medical license in all states where they practice. The Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment component requires physicians to complete at least 75 Continuing Medical Education (CME) through the American Medical Association every three years.
For the Assessment of Knowledge, Judgment, and Skills portion, physicians must pass either ABR’s Online Longitudinal Assessment or a traditional skills exam within the previous five years. Lastly, the Improvement in Medical Practice component requires physicians to complete either a Practice Quality Improvement project or Participatory Quality Improvement
activity at least once every three years to maintain certification.
